Congress to Take Up Mortgage Modification in Bankruptcy This Week

The entire U.S. House of Representatives is expected to take up H.R. 1106 (which now includes the provisions of HR 200) to allow for judicial modification of mortgages in chapter 13 bankruptcy this week, probably Thursday, February 27.  The bill became part of a package of financial services legislation on the floor of the House.  It has already passed the Judiciary Committee.

Members of Congress need to hear from their constituents who support judicial modification this week.  You may phone or fax your elected officials to voice your support.  This legislation also helps people in foreclosure trouble who don’t want to file bankruptcy, according to Chip Parker, Jacksonville bankruptcy attorney.

To find the phone or fax number for your Congressional delegates, you may go to:

1. Go to www.house.gov to obtain the name, address, fax number, and phone number of your Member of Congress;
2. Go to www.senate.gov to obtain the name, address, fax number, and phone number of your State’s Senators;
3. Fax your letter to your elected officials or phone their office.  (Letters should be faxed not mailed; mail takes weeks due to security measures.)
