I am increasingly distressed about the epidemic of home foreclosures
that is devastating families, neighborhoods and our entire economy. I
strongly urge you to co-sponsor and support HR 3609, “Emergency Home
Ownership and Mortgage Equity Protection Act.”

It is unfair that judicial modification is available for owners of
commercial real estate and family farms, but is denied to families whose
most important asset is the home they live in.

Court-ordered modifications would not excuse any families from the
obligation to pay for their home, but would simply give bankruptcy
judges the authority to modify unaffordable loans to make payments
manageable–thus keeping people in their homes and allowing them to
continue paying on their mortgage.

I understand that H.R. 3609 is likely to be considered by the House
soon. For the good of this country, especially North Carolina, please
give your full support to this proposal.
